Getting Dentures? What to Know Before You Start

Dentures are a reliable and affordable solution for replacing missing teeth. Unlike dental implants, dentures are removable, allowing you to take them out and put them back in whenever needed. While dentures can last for several years, they are not permanent and may need to be adjusted or replaced as your mouth naturally changes with age.

That’s why it’s important to visit your dentist at least once a year — to ensure your dentures still fit comfortably and function effectively.

Types of Dentures for Your Needs

There are two main types of dentures: full and partial.

  • Full Dentures: These are designed to replace an entire set of teeth. Upper dentures have an acrylic base that covers the roof of your mouth, while lower dentures are u-shaped to allow free movement of the tongue. Before fitting full dentures, any remaining teeth will need to be removed, and your gums and jawbone must heal—typically over a few months—before your final dentures are made.
  • Partial Dentures: If you’re only missing a few teeth, partial dentures may be the right choice. They can attach to your remaining teeth using small metal clasps, precision attachments, or crowns, helping restore your smile seamlessly.

Caring for Your Dentures

Proper denture care is essential for maintaining oral health and comfort. Here’s how to take care of them:

  • Remove and clean your dentures daily using a soft-bristled brush and denture-safe cleanser.
  • Brush your gums, tongue, and palate gently every day to stimulate circulation and remove bacteria.
  • When not wearing your dentures, keep them moist in water or a denture-cleaning solution to prevent warping.
  • Avoid using hot water, as it may damage the material.

With good care and regular dental visits, your dentures can help you maintain a confident, functional smile for years to come.
